Raising on the Elimination of Child Labour in Interior Sindh
(in collaboration with the All Pakistan Federation of Labour and the Sindh local
Administration)
Proposed Duration: 1 April 2001 - 31 July 2001
Objectives:
- To sensitize and make the communities in rural and urban Sindh aware about
the worst form of child labour and to assist those communities find acceptable
alternatives to child labour.
Activities:
- Hold six one-day seminars in Hyderabad, Mirpurkhas, Mithi, Nawabshah, Sukkur
and Larkana with 50-100 participants each;
- Prepare and disseminate material on the issue of forms and hazards of child
Labour, and organize groups to look for alternatives to child labour and initiate
discussions on redefining the responsibilities of each family member;
- Assist in redistribution of work on the family's enterprise or farm, to
protect children from health hazards resulting from excessive exertion, and
encourage parents to send children to school at least upto the primary level;
- Develop linkages between communities, local union members and key child
labour actors including landlords/employers, and identify 300 focal persons
who can play a vital role in the fight against worst forms of child labour
in those communities;
- Organize a 3-day Provincial Conference in Karachi for selected participants
and focal points from six selected locations, and consolidate observations
and results of the series of seminars undertaken in Interior Sindh and disseminating
the results;
- Develop a better understanding of the differences in the rural and urban
situation of child labour with specific focus on the rural areas, and enhance
participation of urban stakeholders/actors in rural activities to bridge disparities
and communication gaps;
Remarks:
This action programme does not have an overtly defined female
target group. However, in over all awareness raising campaign emphasis would
be given to target local women and girls.
