Women’s
Literacy and Empowerment Programme in Sindh (in
collaboration with the Sindh Education Project)
Proposed Duration: 27th March, 2001 – 15th
September, 2001
Objectives:
- To initiate an educational empowerment programme for 500 women in 10 villages
to address literacy needs, through which women will be involved in planning,
decision making and evaluation processes at all levels;
- To develop (non-formal) educational management structures for women by women
themselves so as to facilitate their well being (e.g. Adult/youth education,
etc.);
- To launch a basic education programme through local teachers to set up 10
women’s literacy and empowerment centres with libraries, which will respect
women’s pace and rhythm of learning and sharing knowledge;
- To train 3 Sathiani/Sathi (volunteers) 10 teachers for sensitively facilitating
center management and basic education skills;
- To empower learners to decide on the agenda and syllabus of learning as
per the needs and priorities of local women themselves;
- To develop, adapt, translate and disseminate 6 posters, 6 stickers and other
printed motivational Education for All (EFA) material in Sindhi, on life skills
for local communities.
Activities:
- Conduction of a baseline survey for identification and enrolment of illiterate
girls and women in the 12-45 age group, with 30-40 learners in each centre;
- Formation and activation of Village Education Committees with the included
representation of women groups to support the Women Empowerment and Literacy
Program (WELP) centres.
