Primary Environmental Care in Girls’ Primary Schools (PECGPS)

Proposed Duration: 1999 – 2003

Objectives:

• To provide water and sanitation facilities in girls’ primary schools;

• To use schools as entry points into communities for promotion of household latrines.

Activities – in 650 schools of 15 districts covering all four provinces in the country:

• Formation of Parent/ Teachers, School Management and School Sanitation Committees;

• Training of committee members and teachers in health and hygiene;

• Civil work for facilities by community;

• Provision of hardware by UNICEF;

• Supply of health and hygiene kits to teachers for their use;

• Development of a school-level monitoring system for improvement of water and sanitation conditions in the school catchment area.
