Under the criteria drawn up by Scientific Technical Advisory Panel (STAP) for the Global Environment Facility, support is provided for projects that address the problem of global warming by reducing greenhouse gas emissions resulting from the use of fossil fuels and the destruction of carbon-absorbing forests.

Projects eligible for GEF funding include activities to:

• Improve end-use efficiency;

• Reduce the emission intensity of energy production;

• Encourage shifts to environmentally benign fuel and transportation modes;

• Reduce non-carbon dioxide emissions, especially methane;

• Promote efficient transmission and distribution of energy;

• Combat deforestation; and/or

• Promote the sequestering of greenhouse gases, e.g., through reforestation.

 

EXAMPLES OF NGO ACTIVITIES ELIGIBLE FOR SUPPORT Fuelwood plantations and other afforestation/reforestation activities. Improved land-management practices, e.g. combating brush fires, introducing alternatives to slash and burn practices. Household energy efficiency programmes, e.g. using fuelwood more efficiently, introducing fuel-efficient, low-emission cookstoves. Development of alternative sources of energy, e.g., solar or winds power projects in rural areas. Biogas and biomass demonstration programmes. Community-based marketing and delivery systems of energy-efficient products for household use. Institutional support to make photovoltaic systems available in rural areas. Small-scale building projects with innovative technology, e.g., insulation, that conserves energy Activities to combat urban air pollution from factories and vehicles, e.g. promotion of public transport.
