
Founder:
The Mahbub ul Haq
Human Development Centre was founded by the late Dr. Mahbub ul Haq. During his lifetime,
Dr. Haq served in many distinguished policy positions, including Finance and Planning
Minister of Pakistan (1982-8), Director of the Policy Planning Department in the World
Bank (1970-82), and Special Adviser to UNDP Administrator. He is the founder and chief
architect of UNDPs world-renowned Human Development Reports. His major publications
include The Strategy of Economic Planning (1963), The Poverty Curtain (1976), and
Reflections on Human Development (1995).
President:
The Centres President is Mrs. Khadija Haq. She is also the current Chairperson of the North-South Roundtable, an influential global policy dialogue forum. She was the Senior Adviser on Education to UNICEF from 1989-95 and has held senior positions in several prestigious research institutions. She has edited and authored many publications, including Dialogue for a New Order (1980), Adjustment with Growth (1984), Managing Human Development (1987), and Development for People (1989).
Research Team:
The research staff of the Mahbub ul Haq Human Development Centre consists of a core group of bright, young scholars, with training in economics and related disciplines from some of the most reputed universities in Pakistan and abroad.
Research Facilities:
The Centres library consists of over 2,000 volumes on economic, social, and political issues, with a special focus on the South Asian region. The Centre has developed an extensive regional database, containing disaggregated data on a wide range of economic and human development indicators.
Intellectual Network:
MHHDC has established an intellectual network with prominent research institutions throughout the SAARC region. The Centre works closely with UNDP, particularly with the Human Development Report Office (New York), Asia and Pacific Bureau (New York), and UNDP field offices in the SAARC nations.
