How to Donate Funds for Afghanistan

With a cheque to the UN Afghan Emergency Trust Fund

The United Nations Afghanistan Emergency Trust Fund (AETF), established in 1988, is coordinated by the Office of the United Nations Humanitarian Co-ordinator for Afghanistan (UNOCHA), temporarily based in Islamabad, Pakistan.

Organisations and individuals wishing to contribute and support UN humanitarian/relief efforts in Afghanistan or towards Afghan refugees in Pakistan, can make their donations in US Dollars at the following Bank and Account Number:

United Banks of Switzerland AG (UBS - AG)
Case Postale 2770,1211
Geneva 2, Switzerland

Account Number: 240-CO-590-161.1

The donations can be 'earmarked' towards a specific effort --or a specific UN Agency-- as well as 'unearmarked' i.e., open for use towards any related activities. Once the donation has been made, UNOCHA should be notified through a letter or via e-mail. The information must include the following:

Name of the Organisation/individual
Amount of Donation in US Dollars
Mailing Address
Telephone Number
e-mail Address
Any specific directions to be taken into account.

Upon written notification by the donor and confirmation with the bank, UNOCHA will be able to co-ordinate the disbursement of funds to the relevant UN agency if the donation is 'earmarked' towards some specific humanitarian/relief effort. In case of an 'unearmarked' donation, UNOCHA will be able to use the money towards the most suitable effort,

Online or with a cheque through NETAID

NetAid was formed out of a collaboration between the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and Cisco Systems. It was created to mobilise support for an end to extreme poverty by bringing individuals, companies and organisations together in ways that expand opportunities for the world's poorest families and communities. It provides direct connections to local projects throughout the developing world that measurably improve the lives of people. The Internet is a key tool in NetAid's efforts to join people together in the fight against extreme poverty.

NetAid maintains active working relationships with leading international organisations including UNDP but also the United Nations Volunteers (UNV) Programme, UNICEF, CARE, Save the Children and the International Rescue Committee (IRC).

NetAid is currently working on at least two programmes operated by NGOs in support of Afghan refugees. These will be posted on the web site: http://app.netaid.org in about two weeks, with complete descriptions of how the money is to be used. In the longer term, NetAid will be supporting NGO projects for the repatriation of Afghan refugees and for rebuilding, particularly in the area of children's education.

People who want to support these efforts can wait until the projects are posted on the site; OR they can give directly now to the NetAid Foundation, earmarking their contributions for the needs of Afghan refugees. Any contributions from Pakistan would be added to a grant of $ 100,000 that NetAid is making to these programmes.

To donate online, please go to:- http://app.netaid.org/programs/Foundation/productdisplay.html

Please note that online donations are preferable because currency conversions are handled by the credit card companies and avoid the imposition of additional service fees.
