This report is designed to provide an insight into human survival, protection and development in the region of South Asia. It provides a profile of poverty by giving statistics, maps, charts and text, based on recent national and sub-national data from the seven countries of South Asia. It provides a conceptual framework to identify the crucial factors for a desirable outcome, namely child survival, growth and development. This framework does not, however, identify how to establish a good process. For this purpose, the report establishes a Triple-A Iterative Cyclical Process: Assessment of the problem, Analysis of the causes of the problem, and Actions based on the analysis, followed by a re-assessment. The report does not look at the poor as passive beneficiaries of transferred commodities and services, but recognizes them as key actors in development efforts. The report also comes up with concrete recommendations for the countries of the region to improve their prevalent conditions.

Key words: Women, Children, South Asia, Human resources, Education, Health, Nutrition, Water, Sanitation, Security, and Religions.
