This study attempts to review and assess the country specific policies and programs in particular provisions and strategies, adopted during the 1990s to enhance the number of female teachers in rural areas. Based on secondary data this study presents an in-depth analysis of the country's education sector along with the profile of primary teachers. It also reviews and assesses the Education for All (EFA) policy, Education Policy 1992, Social Action Program 1992-3, National Education Policy 1998-2010. To supplement the secondary data the research also presents findings from an exploratory field based study.
