As a consequence of UNICEF's initiative to strengthen women's income earning programmes within the context of the basic services strategy for improving their health, social and economic conditions, the current study was initiated. The purpose of the study was to identify the areas of industrial expansion, and on the basis of this to elaborate skill development and income generating schemes for women so that these could feed directly into major areas of industry, and thus bring women into the mainstream of the developmental process. The study was conducted in the province of Punjab and consisted of two parts: the first part consisted of a macro-level analysis of the different industries situated in Punjab, and the second part constituted a vertical micro-level investigation of a selection of industries considered to be suitable. The report does not come to any general conclusions, but does provide certain recommendations for policy and program measures that could be initiated.
Key words: Women, Economic Activity, Industrial Sector, and Employment.
