In an effort to facilitate access to UN Information Resources, the
United Nations Libraries in Pakistan, undertake to provide their patrons
access to information in various formats, be it in print, sound recording,
video recording, or otherwise. To encourage and facilitate use of
electronic resources, the United Nations Libraries in Islamabad also
offer limited public access to the Internet and set forth the following
policy:
I.This service is being offered with the prime purpose of improving
public access to the United Nations Information Resources on
the Internet. However, users may also access other resources
relevant to the United Nations' areas of interest.
II.Users of the Internet/LAN stations are requested to please limit
their sessions to one hour or less when other patrons are waiting.
There is no advance reservation system for these stations, which
are available on a "first come, first served" basis. Sign-up
sheets are available on the Front Desk. Telephone reservations cannot
be accepted.
III.If you wish to save any material, please download your
files to a preformatted IBM floppy disk which may be purchased
for Rs. 25 from the Front Desk. Use of outside disks
is not allowed on Library computers. Please note that viruses
may accidentally be picked up from the Internet. The library is
not responsible for any damage that could be incurred.
IV.Users have the right of confidentiality. However, security is
technically difficult to achieve and the computer is located in
a public area. Electronic transactions of information and viewing
screens could become public. As a result, the library cannot guarantee
privacy or confidentiality. Remember that people using the Internet
after you may see which sites you have visited.
V. Users will find that their Internet session can be much more
productive if outside distractions (i.e. too many persons at the
work station, excessive or loud talking with partners, etc.) are
eliminated. Remember to exercise common courtesy. It is considered
rude to look over another's shoulder to see what he or she is doing
on the computer, and it is disturbing to another's concentration
to stand around the computer while waiting for your turn.
VI. Users of this service must understand that they might put themselves
at risk of criminal or civil liability when they use the Internet
in violation of the Govt. of Pakistan Laws. Use of the Internet/LAN/Computer
Network contrary to this policy may subject a patron to loss of
Internet/LAN/Computer Network privileges, and/or ejection from the
Library. These activities include, but are not restricted to:
Transmitting/accessing obscene materials. Interfering with, disrupting,
or destroying network users, services or equipment. Computer fraud.
Distribution of unsolicited advertising or propaganda, or propagation
of computer worms or viruses. Hacking or spamming. Infringement
of copyright laws. Creating, downloading or uploading files or
programs. Attempting to damage the UN Common Library computer
equipment or software. Altering software configurations causing
degradation of system performance.
VII. Please be aware that the connection may fail or the computer
may "freeze" while you are using it. Such occurrences
are unfortunate, but do not entitle you to go beyond your allotted
time if others are waiting. The computers in the Library may also
be unavailable when needed for repair or maintenance or other purposes.
VIII. The staff of this Library cannot provide in-depth computer
training, but will attempt to answer basic questions or help patrons
locate resources on the Internet. Library staff can also provide
information on where to get appropriate training.
IX. You may not always be able to access the sites on the Internet
that you are trying to visit. There may be too many Internet visitors
and the host computer may have closed or have limited access. The
database or resource may be licensed to a particular institution.
The host computer may have changed its address or closed down. The
Library's Internet connection may be periodically and temporarily
inoperable due to technical difficulties.
X. Failure to comply with the provisions of this statement may
result in a loss of Internet privileges.
XI. E-Mail accounts which do not fall under the domain of World
Wide Web are not available. You may send U. N. electronic documents
and data to your e-mail account, but you cannot send your personal/private
mail from the library's account, nor receive e-mail at that account.
The only way you can send e-mail is if you have already set
up an e-mail account with a mail server, through a web site.
XII. Printing is not allowed on UN Library computers. Please save
your files and use your own computers to print them if so desired
