Internet Use Policy

Using the Internet at the United Nations  Libraries in  Islamabad,  constitutes formal acceptance of an Internet Use Policy as given on the opposite frame.

In an effort to facilitate access to UN Information Resources, the United Nations Libraries in Pakistan,undertake to provide their patrons access to information in various formats, be it in print, sound recording, video recording, or otherwise. To encourage and facilitate use of electronic resources, the United Nations Libraries in Islamabad also offer limited public access to the Internet and set forth the following policy:

I.This service is being offered with the prime purpose of improving public access to the United Nations Information Resources on the Internet. However, users may also access other resources relevant to the United Nations' areas of interest.

II.Users of the Internet/LAN stations are requested to please limit their sessions to one hour or less when other patrons are waiting. There is no advance reservation system for these stations, which are available on a "first come, first served" basis. Sign-up sheets are available on the Front Desk. Telephone reservations cannot be accepted.

III.If you wish  to save any material, please download your files to a preformatted IBM floppy disk which may be purchased  for Rs. 25 from the Front Desk.  Use of outside disks is not allowed on Library computers. Please note that viruses may accidentally be picked up from the Internet. The library is not responsible for any damage that could be incurred.

IV.Users have the right of confidentiality. However, security is technically difficult to achieve and the computer is located in a public area. Electronic transactions of information and viewing screens could become public. As a result, the library cannot guarantee privacy or confidentiality. Remember that people using the Internet after you may see which sites you have visited.

V. Users will find that their Internet session can be much more productive if outside distractions (i.e. too many persons at the work station, excessive or loud talking with partners, etc.) are eliminated. Remember to exercise common courtesy. It is considered rude to look over another's shoulder to see what he or she is doing on the computer, and it is disturbing to another's concentration to stand around the computer while waiting for your turn.

VI. Users of this service must understand that they might put themselves at risk of criminal or civil liability when they use the Internet in violation of the Govt. of Pakistan Laws. Use of the Internet/LAN/Computer Network contrary to this policy may subject a patron to loss of Internet/LAN/Computer Network privileges, and/or ejection from the Library. These activities include, but are not restricted to:

Transmitting/accessing obscene materials. Interfering with, disrupting, or destroying network users, services or equipment. Computer fraud. Distribution of unsolicited advertising or propaganda, or propagation of computer worms or viruses. Hacking or spamming. Infringement of copyright laws. Creating, downloading or uploading files or programs. Attempting to damage the UN Common Library computer equipment or software. Altering software configurations causing degradation of system performance.

VII. Please be aware that the connection may fail or the computer may "freeze" while you are using it. Such occurrences are unfortunate, but do not entitle you to go beyond your allotted time if others are waiting. The computers in the Library may also be unavailable when needed for repair or maintenance or other purposes.

VIII. The staff of this Library cannot provide in-depth computer training, but will attempt to answer basic questions or help patrons locate resources on the Internet. Library staff can also provide information on where to get appropriate training.

IX. You may not always be able to access the sites on the Internet that you are trying to visit. There may be too many Internet visitors and the host computer may have closed or have limited access. The database or resource may be licensed to a particular institution. The host computer may have changed its address or closed down. The Library's Internet connection may be periodically and temporarily inoperable due to technical difficulties.

X. Failure to comply with the provisions of this statement may result in a loss of Internet privileges.

XI. E-Mail accounts which do not fall under the domain of World Wide Web are not available. You may send U. N. electronic documents and data to your e-mail account, but you cannot send your personal/private mail from the library's account, nor receive e-mail at that account. The only way you can send e-mail  is if you have already set up an e-mail account with a mail server, through a web site.

XII. Printing is not allowed on UN Library computers. Please save your files and use your own computers to print them if so desired

AGREEMENT TO USE THE UNITED NATIONS COMMON LIBRARY'S INTERNET/LAN/COMPUTER NETWORK CONSISTENT WITH POLICY STATEMENT

1. I have read the Internet/LAN/Computer Network Policy Statement and agree to comply with the terms of the policy.

2. I understand that if I fail to comply with the Policy, I may lose eligibility for use of the Library's Internet/LAN/Computer Network.
