The
United Nations Common Library exists with the purpose of providing
information support to the United Nations staff in Pakistan as well
as the consultants and researchers working on the ongoing projects.
The collections have been built and services have been designed
especially to fulfil the information needs of the United Nations
System in Pakistan.
However,
we also welcome the visiting researchers and students
who are working in the areas relevant to the United Nations' work
and wish to use our collections or the online resources of the UN,
for reference purposes. No special authorization is necessary for
visiting the United Nations Common Library. The following
services and facilities are available for persons visiting
the Library:
Facilities for Library visitors:
1.
Online
catalogue
Relevant
and comprehensive search results are available from our library's
Online Catalogue. You can search the Catalogue while you're
visiting, or save time by searching before you come.
2.
Access to the collections
The
print materials are available on the open shelves. The CD ROM
collection, Online Statistical Databases and Digital Repositories
of UN Documents are available on open access PCs. Detailed information
about our holdings and the arrangement of the collection is
available.
3.
Reading Room
Visitors
may stay in the Library Reading Room up to 4:45pm to read the
books, magazines and newspapers or consult the online resources
of the United Nations through the Free Internet Access Terminals.
4.
Internet Access Terminals for public
In
order to facilitate access to the extensive online information resources
of the United Nations, we offer free Internet Access Terminals to
the persons visiting the Library. Users of this service can:
- Make
Internet Searches to retrieve information on UN Web Sites
- Access
the Online Statistical Databases and Full-text document repositories
- Search
the UN Common Library Catalog
- Consult
the Information on CD ROM Server
After
consultation of Internet based resources, the required information
and data may be sent to an e-mail address or downloaded on a diskette.

Library
Services
- The
Book Loans Service
Book
loans, are available to the members only as permissible by the
Book Loans Procedure. Other visitors must see the information
on Interlibrary Loans / Document Delivery
or find out about becoming an Online
User. Otherwise, the users must consult the materials within
the library or use the photocopying service as permitted by
copyright law.
- Reference
and Readers' Enquiry Service
Research
advice and practical help is available to the visitors, from
our knowledgeable and experienced library staff.
- The
Inter-Library Loans Service
In
order to fulfil the diverse information needs of our Library
users, we strive to exploit the extensive resources available
in the other libraries in Islamabad. Interlibrary loan links
have beenestablished with libraries like PIMS Library for Medical
Information, PIDE Library for Development and Economics information,
NARC Library for Agricultural information, etc, and required
information items are borrowed from these libraries for our
users. Users affiliated with these Libraries can utilize the
facility for borrowing our Library's materials through their
libraries.
- The
Photo copying Service
The
UN staff, the UN delegates and affiliated users can make a limited
free usage of the Library's photocopying machine for making one
copy only. Other users may use the paid photocopy facility.
