The United Nations family in Pakistan joins tens of millions of people in Pakistan and all around the world in mourning the passing of Abdul Sattar Edhi.
When the United Nations was created in 1945 it was to “reaffirm faith in fundamental human rights and in the dignity and worth of the human person” and all nations committed “to practice tolerance and live together in peace with one another as good neighbours”. Since then countries and people around the world have tried to live up to these standards, too often with limited success. But Abdul Sattar Edhi embodied these principles and reached out to millions of people irrespective of their race, religion and ethnicity, showing what can be done through service, honesty and modesty. His life and values will continue to inspire people everywhere.
We extend our deepest condolences to his family and to the people of Pakistan.
