The Arts Council of Pakistan has been functioning as a NGO in Karachi for more than 40 years. It was and remains a pioneer organization devoted to the promotion of art and cultural activities.

The affairs of the Arts Council of Pakistan, Karachi, are managed by a governing board which is elected by the general body annually. The programmes and policies of the Arts Council are executed by a paid Executive Director, who works under the instructions of the governing body. All members of the governing body work voluntarily.

The Arts Council of Pakistan has organized several hundred exhibitions of visual art and produced and presented performing arts programmes including mimic shows, stage dramas etc. Besides teaching in various disciplines of visual and performing arts, the Arts Council has also played a leading role in organizing and presenting cultural programmes with other countries. Furthermore, it has contributed to forming cultural teams under the cultural exchange programme together with a large number of other countries.

The activities of the Arts Council very naturally tend to espouse UN goals and principles. For instance, it hosted the exhibit of historical photographs depicting "50 years of Pakistan at the UN" in April 2000, held a festival of Freedom and Peace for 10 days in August 2000( focusing on women's rights as well as preparing events by the Youth for the Youth and of the Youth) and declared the year 2000 as "The Year of Arts and Culture for Peace."
