Human Rights Day

Karachi - 9 December 2004

On 9 December 2004, the United Nations Information Centre organised a seminar on Human Rights Day on behalf of the UN System in Pakistan in collaboration with the DPI-associated NGO, Pakistan Women Lawyers' Association (PAWLA). The seminar took place in the Marriott Hotel, Karachi. The Minister for Home and Coordination of the Government of Sindh was the chief guest.

The UN Resident Coordinator read the Secretary-General's Human Rights Day message following the opening remarks by the PANIS Chair/UNIC Director. The seminar focused on human rights education from the points of education, law and citizens' rights. The Home Minister made a substantive speech to conclude the session. Speakers included the ombudsman of the Sindh government, an advocate and former governor of Sindh and the President of PAWLA. Most presentations were made in Urdu.

In the same venue, fifteen schools in Karachi organised an exhibition of drawings on human rights. There was also a presentation of a classical song on human rights by a well-known Pakistani singer, Tina Sani, at the end of the session.

More than 250 people from the government, parliamentarians, representatives of UN offices in Karachi, teachers, NGOs and lawyers attended the session. There was extensive media coverage in Urdu and English. The Pakistan Broadcasting Corporation (PTV) and five private channels ran stories on it, and all dailies in Urdu and English covered the event.
