Panel discussion

The UN System organized : In collaboration with the Fatima Jinnah Women University, Rawalpindi, the Centre organised a panel discussion on World Press Freedom Day on the university campus. Ms Ayesha Haroon, Resident Editor of daily newspaper "The Nation" and Mr Mohammad Ziauddin, Resident Editor of the daily "DAWN" as well as the bureau chiefs of BBC (Mr Paul Anderson) and AFP (Mr Jean-Hervé Deiller) were panelists. Ms Rukhsana Waqar, a Visiting Lecturer of the Department of Communication Sciences of the University, acted as moderator.

The Vice-Chancellor of the University made introductory remarks followed by the Secretary-General's Press Freedom Day message and the opening remarks by the UNIC Director. Issues discussed included the definition of freedom of the Press, impartiality in reporting, embedded journalism, use of terms in reporting, community support to the media, etc. The hour-long discussion was followed by a question-answer session during which the students of journalism, faculty members and the media asked questions to the panelists. The panelists and the audience also exchanged comments on the discussed points.
