The United Nations Information Centre (UNIC) and the Foreign Service Academy jointly organised a seminar on UN peacekeeping operations in Islamabad on 29 May 2006. The seminar was held at the Academy with the participation of Major General Shaukat Sultan, Director General of Inter Services Public Relations, Mr Paneerselvam Perambalam of the UN Department of Peacekeeping Operations, and Mr Niaz A Naik, former Foreign Secretary.
After the message of the UN Secretary-General on the Day, Major
General Shaukat Sultan shared his experience as a military observer in the UN
Mission in Bosnia and Eastern Slavonia. Mr Paneerselvam Perambalam of the UN
Department of Peacekeeping Operations, who is the Chief Administrative Officer
of the UN Monitoring Observers Group in India and Pakistan (UNMOGIP), made presentations
on his experiences in more than seven UN peacekeeping operations he participated
before coming to Pakistan. Mr Niaz A Naik, former Foreign Secretary, who has
extensive experience in UN affairs, highlighted key issues of UN peacekeeping
operations from a civilian point of view, and he summed up the seminar.
Students from Quad-i-Azam University and the National University of Sciences and Technology as well as cadet diplomats took part in the seminar.
