
To commemorate the International Day of UN Peacekeepers, the United Nations
Information Centre Islamabad and the Institute of Strategic Studies (ISSI) organised
a seminar at the ISSI conference room on 27 May 2005. Mr Riaz Mohammad Khan,
Foreign Secretary, was the chief guest. Ms Ann Wilkens, Ambassador of Sweden
and Major General Imtiaz Qureshi
also spoke.
It started with opening remarks by the Chairman of the Board of ISSI, Mr Agha Shahi, former foreign minister, followed by an introduction of the theme of this year Sixty years of UN peacekeeping Evolution and Change by the UNIC Director.
The Swedish Ambassador touched upon Swedens policy in UN peacekeeping, while the Major General shared his experience as a Commander of UNPROFOR. The Foreign Secretary focused on Pakistans participation in UN peacekeeping operations in his keynote speech.
Their presentations were followed by a video projection on Pakistans participation in UN peacekeeping operations produced by the Inter-Services Public Relations, the public relations wing of the Pakistani military. The session ended with concluding remarks by the Director General of ISSI after half an hour of a question and answer session.
