On 25 October 2004, the UN Resident Coordinators Office organised a flag-raising ceremony at the ILO Auditorium. Approximately 150 people attended including Government officials, diplomats and staff members of UN agencies. The chief guest was the Director General in charge of UN affairs of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The Secretary-Generals message was read by the Acting Resident Coordinator after the raising of the UN flag. Then the chief guest delivered a keynote speech.
Every year, the UN System in Pakistan presents a UN Recognition Award to an organisation which has contributed to the works of the United Nations. This year, DPI-associated NGO SACH recommended by UNIC received it. The award in the form of a shield was presented to the Executive Director of SACH by the Director General of the Foreign Ministry.

On 28 October, UNIC organised on behalf of the UN System a speech contest again at the ILO Auditorium. Ten colleges/schools participated in the contest. The State Minister for Education was the chief guest, and the jury consisted of the Director (UN-I) of the Foreign Ministry, Education Adviser of the Education Ministry and the Director of UNESCO. The theme of the speech was: We, the future How can we support the United Nations? Prior to this, the ten colleges/schools organised speech contests of their own to select the best ones, to which UNIC was invited to attend. One college also provided posters drawn by its students on the theme of peace.
The winners of three top speeches received cash prizes and shields. All ten participants received gifts donated by ILO, UNICEF, WFP and WHO. Over 200 people attended the speech contest from schools, colleges, government ministries and the UN System.
